Underground Service Locating

Identification and mapping of detectable underground utilities before you excavate, trench or drill.

Locate before you excavate.

Dial Before You Dig plans show registered assets, but private services, old lines and approximate alignments are common on real sites. Service locating checks what is actually detectable in the ground where you plan to work.

ASGPR uses electromagnetic locating and, where useful, ground penetrating radar to trace detectable services and mark them out clearly on the surface, so your crew can plan excavation with better information.

Typical uses

  • Pre-excavation and trenching
  • Footings, piers and bore holes
  • Drainage and stormwater
  • Electrical and comms conduit runs
  • Fencing, signage and landscaping posts
  • Pre-construction site investigation

Electrical cable locating

Trace detectable live and de-energised cables, sub-mains and conduit runs between switchboards, outbuildings, lighting and pits.

Water, sewer & drainage

Locate detectable water services, sewer branches and stormwater lines, including tracing from pits and access points where available.

Mark-outs & reporting

Colour-coded paint and flag mark-outs on site, with photos and a practical summary of what was found, what wasn't, and any limits.

The risk

A new conduit trench crosses a yard where the water service, NBN lead-in and sewer branch are not shown on any plan.

What ASGPR does

Trace live and passive services along the 10 m route, then scan with GPR to check for non-metallic pipes crossing the trench line.

What you get

Paint and flag mark-outs on the ground, approximate depths where they can be estimated, and a short summary with photos.

FAQs

Common questions.

Do I still need Dial Before You Dig plans?

Yes. Plans show registered assets and on-site locating checks what is detectable on your site. Use both, together with safe excavation practices.

Can every underground service be found?

No. Locating can only identify detectable services. Depth, material, ground conditions and access all affect results, and we will tell you clearly about any limitations.
